Theme 2: Why Athletes Don’t Live by the Spirit of Sport

For some athletes, even that rules and regulations in regards with doping are understood and well comprehended, it does not motive them to comply and respect fair play. This creates a fertile environment for violating good sportsmanship, and as a result in violation of the anti-doping rules as described by the World Anti-Doping Agency. This session describes thoroughly the psychological mechanism of Moral Disengagement in order to explain why some athletes violate sporting rules, focusing on the case of doping. In the context of practical exercises in this Session, athletes and exercisers can draw from their own experience, as well as on cases of well-known athletes that violated anti-doping rules. The Session aims at enhancing doping awareness literacy in order to be aware of the powerful influence that Moral Disengagement has in sports behavior that relates directly to the use of PAES.
