Theme 9: Beyond Being Clean Athletes’ Role in Protecting Clean Sport

This Session describes the concept of whistleblowing, discussing the benefits and usefulness of athletes and exercisers reporting a doping use that was witnessed. Assuming that the use of doping substances can lead to serious health consequences, while violating the sporting ethos and harming sport integrity, athletes’ contribution in protecting clean sport may go beyond keep oneself clean.  Although whistleblowing is regarded as useful tool in safeguarding sports integrity, the processes that need to be followed, as well as the challenges that may be faced are not always clear to athletes. This Session presents where and how to report knowledge of doping incidents, prompting a discussion on whether whistleblowing is a socially accepted behavior or not. This Session aims at enhancing doping awareness literacy and increase awareness about whistleblowing, in order to increase athletes’ perceived self-efficacy in safeguarding clean sport when necessary.
